AI and the Arts

The Digital Futures Research Platform is exploring the transformational impact of digital technologies in the arts, education, community and heritage.

The Digital Futures Research Platform is exploring the transformational impact of digital technologies in the arts, education, community and heritage. Working in partnership with Creative Manchester, the platform is exploring technologies ranging from digital preservation to virtual and augmented reality, providing unprecedented access to cultural heritage, create new cultural experiences, and redefine the media and creative industries landscape.

Part of this exploration is AI and the Arts, a highly interdisciplinary project that opens up a number of exciting possibilities for research, teaching, knowledge exchange, and business engagement. This is through new technologies in Data Science and AI, such as the following research projects:

  • Composing with AI and creating a live performance combining soundsculpture, electronics, and Machine Learning.
  • Audio-visual compositions created and made possible by the integration of Machine Learning, including iterative composition cycles and hybrid human/machine performance outcomes.
  • Using biometric information – such as from commercial wearable technologies – to investigate how biometric information can be used with Machine Learning and AI towards immersive musical media.
  • Using recommender engines to personalise information tailored to the individual user for databases of extensive data, e.g., library and museum collections.
