International Photography Competition 2022

Creative Manchester is hosting its fourth International Photography Competition, in partnership with the Manchester China Institute. This year's theme is 'Home.'

Photography can reveal our common humanity, promoting mutual understanding in UK-China relations, which is why 'Home' is the subject of the 2022 competition.

Submissions open: Tuesday, 1 March 2022 - Tuesday, 10 May 2022.

Is 'Home' always a place? Wherever we are, we see things that remind us of Home, a feeling evoked through our senses. Whatever Home means to you, whether it’s a feeling, person, or place, try to capture that essence in your photograph.

Use your smartphone camera (no professional photography) to capture a moment that you associate with home and email your photograph to us. Your submission should feature a title of no more than 10 English words or 30 Chinese characters and a caption of no more than 30 words/50 characters.

It is crucial that your photos have a human element, and must feature people in some capacity.

Preference will be given to photographs that are not digitally edited. However, colour photos converted to black and white are fine.

How to Enter

All submissions should be emailed to with the subject line 'The Feeling of Home' and should include:

  • Your name;
  • Where in the UK or China the photo was taken;
  • A photo in its original format (please set your smartphone to its highest resolution). If the file is too big to email, let us know and we can provide an alternative method of submission;
  • An accompanying title of no more than 10 words/30 characters;
  • A narrative caption of no more than 30 words/50 characters describing the image and what it means to you.

The smartphone photos must have been taken by yourself in the UK or China, in the last 12 months. One submission is permitted per participant.

Submissions will be judged on their concept, creativity, and composition:

  • Concept: How effective is the submission in capturing the essence of home?
  • Creativity: Does the submission capture the essence of home in a unique and surprising way?
  • Composition: How technically competent is the submission? Have composition, lighting, contrast, and mood been considered?

This is not a professional photography competition. Digital editing of smartphone photos should be kept to a minimum. The emotional impact of the photo will outweigh its technical quality. And remember to include people in your photo!

  • Best UK Submission: £1,000 + photo book of the competition
  • Best China Submission: 8,888 RMB (£1000) + photo book of the competition
  • People’s Choice Award: £500 + photo book of the competition

All successfully received submissions will receive a confirmation email. Please contact us if you have submitted but do not hear back from us.

By entering, participants agree that their submissions can be used for marketing and/or communications purposes.
