The Complete Works: Hope & Resistance
Ellah Wakatama OBE led the first in an annual series of in-depth interviews with leading contemporary writers.
From 15 September 2019 to 19 February 2020
Partners: HOME, Centre for New Writing, Manchester City of Literature
Ellah Wakatama is an editor, critic and broadcaster, and the Editor-at-Large at Canongate Books.
In summer 2019, she was appointed Senior Research Fellow at The University to facilitate knowledge exchange between the Centre for New Writing and HOME, and to curate a series of literature events over three years.
The Complete Works was an opportunity to ‘slow down’ in our current environment of fast news. Drawing on six international writers’ entire bodies of work, Ellah dug deep into their imaginations, motivations and inspirations. She also examined how their work speaks to the world we live in, our relationships and what it means to be human.
The acclaimed guests in the series were Jackie Kay (poet and playwright), Gary Younge (journalist, columnist, author and broadcaster), Kamila Shamsie (novelist), Christina Lamb (foreign correspondent and author), Aminatta Forna (novelist and essayist) and Lindsey Hilsum (television journalist and writer). Each gave audiences at HOME fascinating insights into their work.
